Reading This Chart:
Reporters for the Blackboard Awards contacted all of the schools listed in these charts to request updated school statistics. While some responded to our questionnaire, others declined to participate. Numbers appearing in italics were provided by schools themselves, or were taken from schools’ websites. When we could not get information directly from schools, we used data from the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education, HYPERLINK "http://www.nces.ed.gov" www.nces.ed.gov, which represent the 2007-2008 school year. Because of the variety of sources used to create this chart, readers should be aware that information for one school may have come from more than one place and therefore may reflect different school years.

Size of School: This number reflects the study body population for the entire school.

Overall diversity: Some schools say they do not break down diversity data by race, but instead they provide a percentage of overall diversity, which would reflect the non-white student population. “N/A” indicates no data were available for a specific race category.

Student-teacher ratio: If a school provided more than one student-teacher ratio figure for individual grade levels within the middle school level, we calculated an average student-teacher ratio for all middle school grades. Some schools include teacher aides in the student-teacher ratio figure.
